The Working Life

Firstly, my dear readers, let me apologize. I have not been posting very frequently here- nor in any other blogs- due to being quite busy this past week or so. And what had been keeping me busy-busy? The epic search for proper employment.

I say "epic" as it can be considered quite true. When one is seeking employment they are always on the quest for the one job which will make them happiest, as well as covering all necessary bills. But, in my own personal search, I had to come to the realization that the first job(s) one gets are not always going to be that sparkling beacon of happiness that you are looking for. In fact... I found that I have had to accept employment from three employers- which will make for a very tired princess upon returning home- in order to acquire enough hours of working to be considered full-time. (For those who may be curious, my positions are as follows: full-time bakery and deli worker for a small specialty grocery store, part-time baker/ pastry cook for a fully-functional Christian bookstore and cafe, and a very part-time position at a waffle/ dessert cafe.)

Through all of this I have discovered that the length of the journey is often much longer than we assume. In other words- if one plans that it may only take a month to search for a job, plan for three. (Also, of course, one's area's own job market always should be considered.) I would like to offer a little advice to those all of you searching for jobs: you will probably find more small part-time jobs available than non. If I had only been searching for ten small hours a week to cover buying myself little treats and trinkets my search would have been done long ago. But, when searching for full-time employment, I found that many employers were very picky. They would advertise a position which was generally entry-level with no experience required, but you would show and their main complaint was that you had no experience- since you were in school beforehand.

Sometimes, it is all so confusing. But it is these first jobs you manage to acquire, no matter how much they are not your ideal, that will be your stepping stones. A job that seems to require stuffing letters into envelopes can develop into a receptionist job, just as a small bakery job can develop into working for a fancy hotel's pastry team (which I would love to do).

But, most importantly, never give up your dreams. Never let the fact that you have to stray from the path a little define the entirety of what you would like your journey through life to be. I know that I, once I have figured out how my job schedule will be working, will be doing my best to keep pastry on my mind. I want to make fancy desserts for friends and events, as well as offer my services to others (cake making, etc).

In the world of today it is amazing how quickly one can lose their dreams amidst the rushing about, but... I have always thought that if we lose our dreams, or even the remnants of them, we often lose ourselves. Who we are, in essence. We may find ourselves becoming no more than just another worker bee. Nameless. But we must fight for our right to become a name. To be something more than average. To achieve dreams and be happy~
